About Me
Bring Joy Back to the Field of Medicine
First Do No Harm: A Physician's Guidebook from Medical School to Retirement
My Story
I was happy with my life as a mother to Francesca (a.k.a. Frankie) with a successful career as a Pediatric Nephrologist specializing in taking care of children with kidney transplants until August 17th, 2011, happened. This was the date my father, also a physician, died by suicide. Through my journey of learning about the events in my father's life that led to his untimely death, I learned that my father was not alone. Many physicians, like my father, suffer from burnout or mental health struggles. I read every book out there on the topic and talked to many, many physicians and trainees. What I realized was that there were common themes in physician's who are experiencing burnout or die by suicide, but there was a paucity of information on how how to relate this information to yourself. Are you at risk? Are you experiencing burnout now and do not even now it?
In First Do No Harm: A physician's burnout and mental health guidebook from medical school to retirement, I provide a lot of little pearls of wisdom that I learned from my dad's life and death, as well as my own career in medicine, and I explain how you can apply them to yourself or someone you care about who works in the field of medicine. I truly love the field of medicine and I hope my journey contributes to bringing back the joy to what I love so dearly.
